There are few things as disturbing as seeing mold growing on or inside of the formerly pristine caulking located around your bathtub and shower. The absolute best and recommended way to deal with mold is to hire a Certified Mold Remediation Specialist. These tips are just our suggestions and are not guaranteed to work. Fresh Tech Maid, Chicago's favorite home cleaning service is here to provide you with some useful information. Here are 5 ways to deal with mildew and mold to make your home a safer place!

1) Redo everything.

In some cases, the mold is growing on your caulking because the wall board behind it is wet. This is due to an improperly built bathtub or shower area. Poor grout, misaligned tiles, and improper insulation can cause moisture to become trapped within the walls. This moisture will seep out, and cause mildew and mold to grow everywhere – including on the caulking. Replacing the entire area is sometimes the best, yet impractical, solution.

2) Remove the caulking and re-caulk the seams.

If the problem seems to be with caulking itself – and the walls behind your bathtub or shower are dry and built with proper methods, then the caulk can be scraped off and replaced. You’ll need a flat razor blade with which to scrape off the caulking, and a tube or two of bathroom caulk in the correct color. Follow the instructions on the tube in order to apply the caulk correctly.

3) Use a specially designed mildew and mold removing compound.

There are some industrial strength mold cleaners used by some Evanston services that are available for the public to purchase. However, you more than likely won’t need something this strong. A specialty mold and mildew cleaner like X-14 sometimes does the job. Make sure to follow the instructions on the back of the bottle, and use the cleaner in a well-ventilated room. You also should wear protective gear like gloves when cleaning with it.

4) Apply bleach with an applicator, like the bleach pens designed for stained clothing.

A bleach pen or other applicator can help you get the cleaning solution directly on the moldy sections of your caulking. The best thing about this method is the fact that is it easy to apply. Bleach is not only good for keeping your white clothing as clean as possible, but it kills mold and mildew very effectively.

5) Take steps to prevent damp conditions in your bathroom.

Both mold and mildew like to grow in damp, dark conditions. After you shower or take a bath, leave the bathroom fan running for around an hour afterwards. This will remove some of the dampness from the room. Leave the lights on for that same amount of time, as the heat from them will also help dry the room out. Plus, take the time to wipe down the tiled walls, as well as the glass door or walls of the shower, if you have them. All of these will help prevent mold from growing.Mold and mildew on the caulking in your bathroom can be dealt with in several different ways. Prevention, rebuilding, and proper cleaning technique, either by an Evanston maid service or with your own hands, can all help. We hope these 5 ways to deal with mildew and mold have been useful for you!
